Miracle on the Hudson- Corporate Workshop

Introduction

On 15 January 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 departed New York's LaGuardia Airport bound for Charlotte, North Carolina. Just minutes after take-off, the aircraft struck a flock of birds, causing both engines to fail.

Faced with an unprecedented emergency, Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger and First Officer Jeffrey Skiles had only moments to assess the situation, communicate effectively, and make a critical decision. Unable to return safely to an airport, the crew successfully landed the aircraft on the Hudson River, resulting in the survival of all 155 passengers and crew onboard.

While rooted in aviation, the lessons from Flight 1549 extend far beyond the flight deck. The case study provides valuable insights into how individuals and teams can remain calm during uncertainty, make effective decisions with limited information, communicate under pressure, and work collaboratively to achieve successful outcomes.

Through this workshop, participants will explore the leadership principles demonstrated during this extraordinary event and consider how aviation thinking can be applied to improve performance, resilience, and decision-making within their own organisations.
